ORIGIN

The Basenji originates in Africa. It is said to be one of the most ancient breeds. Evidence of this can be seen on painted slabs in the tombs of egyptian pharoahs.

DESCRIPTION

The Basenji is a medium sized breed that has a short smooth coat. Colors can include red, black, tricolour (black with tan in the traditional pattern), and brindle (black stripes on a background of red), all with white. Their face has wrinkles, and their tail curls up over their back.

TEMPERAMENT

The Basenji is an alert, energetic, and affectionate dog. They do have an independant trait, somewhat like a cat, making them a challenge in training at times. They are eager to please when they choose to be, and will form close bonds with family members, but may be a bit aloof with strangers. They are very clean about themsleves, also much like a cat in that regard. They do not like water at all, so it is probably a good thing they are so clean. Most of the time, a Basenji will avoid water at all costs. Some people choose this breed because they are known to be a barkless dog. This is often a mistake. While it is true, they dont bark, they do have the ability to make sounds, and if raised with other dogs, they may try to mimic a bark. They can also howl and squeal. One sound they do make is commonly referred to as a yodel.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Will do fine in apartment or with a small yard. Exercise is needed on a regular basis to keep fit, because some have a tendancy to become lazy.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Some known health problems that the Basenji may be prone to:

  • fanconi's syndrome (problems with the kidneys)
  • progressive retinal atrophy
  • intestinal problems

GROOMING

Basenjis need very little in way of grooming. They shed very little hair, and are good about grooming themselves. They are a good choice for people who suffer from allergies.
