ORIGIN

Often it is believed that the Chinese Crested originated in Africa, and some believe it was descended from the Chihuahua and Mexican Hairless Dog. Recent studies using DNA however, suggest that the dog is of African origin, and is more closely related to the Basenji.

DESCRIPTION

The Chinese Crested dog can be seen as two different varieties. One is the hairless variety, and one is known as the powderpuff variety. The hairless has only a single coat that only covers the head, tail, and feet. The hairless skin can be be a variety of colors ranging from a fleshy color to black in color. The Powderpuff has a thick double coat which is very soft. Colors also may vary with this variety. In every litter of pups it is possible to get both varieties. This is because every dog will carry both a hairless gene and a powderpuff gene.

TEMPERAMENT

Affectionate and playful, the Chinese Crested dog make a wonderful addition to most any family. In general very good with children and any pets you may have. Socializing them early on will prevent them from being timid with strangers. They are not known to be excessive barkers.

IDEAL ENVIRONMENT

Well suited for apartment life. They do not require a great deal of exercise and a regular walking routine will more than likely fill their requirements. They are very sensitive to cold weather.

HEALTH PROBLEMS

Chinese Crested Dogs may be prone to the following health problems:

  • acne
  • sunburn
  • progressive retinal atrophy
  • dental problems

GROOMING

This breed sheds little to no hair, and are a good breed of choice for those people who suffer from allergies. Regular brushing is required for the powderpuff variety to prevent matting. The hairless variety may be bathed more frequently and oil may be rubbed into the skin.
