ORIGIN
The Irish Setter originated in Ireland in the 1700's. The breed was developed through the breeding of various Spaniels and Setters, as well as the Old spanish Pointer. The breed was developed for the purpose of pointing as well as retrieving game.
DESCRIPTION
A beautiful muscular breed of dog, slightly longer than they are tall. They have a rich mahogany colored silky coat that is medium length with lots of feathering. This covers the dense thick undercoat below, that aids in weather protection.
TEMPERAMENT
The Irish Setter makes an ideal family pet for the family that can provide the activity and exercise these dogs require. They get along very well with children, and love a chance to play with other dogs. Some are said to be a bit of a challenge to train, but beginning early training and socializing will prevent the start of bad habits. Irish Setters are not known to have great guarding qualities, and do not display aggression, but they may bark to let you know when someone is approaching.
IDEAL ENVIRONMENT
Because of their high exercise requirements, the Irish Setter is not a good breed of choice for those living in apartments. These dogs would do best with large area to run in, and an active family who likes to be outdoors.
HEALTH PROBLEMS
Irish Setters may be prone to the following health problems:
- hip dysplasia
- progressive retinal atrophy
- entropion
- Von Willebrands disease
- bloat
- entropion
- hypothyroidism
GROOMING
Irish Setters are average shedders, and it is recommended you brush regularly, and more often when shedding is heavier. Bathe only when necessary.
