Manchester Terriers originated in Manchester England in the 19th century. The breed was developed by John Hulme for the purpose of hunting rats. He crossed a Whippet with a cross bred terrier.

The Manchester Terrier has two varieties, the Toy and the Standard. Although they may resemble the Doberman, there is no relation. Manchester Terriers have v-shaped ears that may be cropped or folded over naturally. They have a slightly arched back. The coat is short and shiny and always black and tan in color.

Manchester Terriers are alert, intelligent high spirited dogs. They are quick to learn and eager to please their master. Early training is a must with this breed to prevent agression with other animals, and to establish who is boss, and what is expected of him. They don't like to be left alone for long periods of time.

This breed is well suited for apartment life and can get along without a yard. They do need lots of exercise with daily walks or a chance to run somewhere.

Manchester Terriers may be prone to:

• reactions to excessive sun exposure

Manchester Terriers require very little grooming. The standard sized Manchester is an average shedder, but the toy Manchester will shed little or no hair.
